Song Tao, a professional artist and designer, is also known as the “designer behind the scenes” because of his passion for event curation and design promotion. For example, in the 2012 Beijing Poly Auction, “The Internationally Famous Designers of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art”, he was the convener of the auction.

At this auction, we saw several works such as “The Way of Integration (Chair)”, “Ladder (Picture)”, “Wenren Tea Table, Jade Case Pavilion Cloud” and so on. These pieces of Chinese furniture are different from other works. In addition to wood, they use modern materials such as acrylic and stainless steel. It can be said that the furniture he designed is not "pure" Chinese furniture, but the inheritance of these furniture to the Chinese furniture charm is visible at a glance.

The use of modern materials is rare in the design of new Chinese furniture, but as he puts it: “The pursuit of innovation in surface form is only about exploring the popularity of Ming furniture and the inheritance of its rigorous craftsmanship.”

This time we walked into Song Tao's design world and visited his views on the design of new Chinese furniture and his design philosophy.

Express traditional furniture in modern materials

Reporter: In the 2012 Beijing Poly Auction, “The Internationally Famous Designers of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art”, your furniture is very different from the works of Wan Chuantang Liu Chuansheng and Banmu Lvyong. The most obvious is In the use of materials, it is a bold attempt to use classical materials such as acrylic and stainless steel to combine wood to express the rhyme of classical furniture. What was the starting point you considered at the time?

Song Tao: My design pays more attention to the comparison of materials. For designers, it is sensitive to new materials. The design reflects the background of the times, and the use of materials for each era is important. Acrylic and stainless steel are modern industrial materials, which are the materials produced in this era and are in line with the aesthetics of this era. The combination of acrylic, stainless steel and wood allows modern materials to be complemented and contrasted with wood to discover different aesthetics between materials.

In addition, although acrylic, stainless steel and other materials are used, they are all connected by a 榫卯 structure, which is a completely traditional process. I believe that materials are not the most essential difference between Chinese and Western furniture design. In the development of furniture in China, the choice of materials has also undergone great changes, such as stone, bronze, and wood, which have been used in various periods.
