The new packaging of foods that have undergone coloration in Canada

A new food package that can change color when food contains pathogenic bacteria, pesticides, or genetically modified ingredients was successfully developed by Canada's "Toxin Alarm" company.

This creative food package is divided into several layers: The first layer that comes into direct contact with food is a porous layer, from which pathogenic microorganisms can penetrate and then reach the gel layer. This layer contains antibiotics mixed with color compounds. After contact with bacteria, color antibiotics are activated and enter the outermost packaging layer to bind with other antibodies coated on invisible warning signs. In this way, the logo appears, reminding consumers not to buy the product. The antibodies used in this package are very common, and they are often used by laboratories to detect four bacteria that can cause food poisoning: Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli 0517, and Campylobacter.

This package is as inexpensive as a normal sandwich package, and can be modified to identify the protein properties of pesticides or even genetically modified foods. However, this kind of packaging cannot detect bacteria with low levels, and some experts worry that consumers may be misled.
