China Consumers Association: Scientifically selected car safety seats to ensure children's safety

Various studies have shown that accidental casualties have become a major risk factor for children's life safety since the 1980s; among them, road traffic accidents are the "number one killer" of child casualties. The data shows that 18,500 children in China are killed or injured in traffic accidents every year. More than 180,000 children under the age of 15 die every year in traffic accidents, and hundreds of thousands of children are disabled.

Many parents think that if they hold their children in their arms and drive at a slower speed, there will be no danger, and there will be protection of seat belts. But is this statement really correct? Relevant experts pointed out that when the car brakes at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour, the infant with a weight of 5.5 kilograms will become 110 kilograms under the action of inertia. In this case, the parents simply cannot afford to hold the child in their arms. US traffic accident statistics show that the use of child safety seats can reduce child injury accidents by 71%. According to a report by the World Health Organization, the percentage of children using safety seats is increased by 10%, and the probability of children being fatally injured is reduced by 35%.

As China has increased the legislation and popularization of child safety seats, safety seats have gradually become familiar and recognized. But in the face of a wide variety of safety seats on the market, how can we choose a safety seat that suits your car and is suitable for your child? The China Consumers Association reminds consumers:

1. Choose a safety seat based on the child's weight and age .

At present, there are different groups of safety seats on the market. When purchasing, parents choose according to the weight of the baby, and refer to the age.

2. Choose a safety seat according to the connection method.

The child safety seats currently on the market are roughly divided into two types of interface connections: a child safety seat installation interface and a seat belt fastening method.

The child safety seat installation interface is also called ISO FIX, its full name is "International Standards Organisation FIX", translated into Chinese: International Organization for Standardization. ISOFIX uses consistent anchor points on the seat of the vehicle, allowing the child seat to be easily and securely connected. Safe and convenient. The ISO FIX standard was originally developed because the child safety seats on the market were fixed in different ways. Some used shoulder straps and some were fixed with belts. This resulted in different models due to different seats, seat belts and fixing methods. As a result, the fixed position of the child seat is different, and as a result, the seat does not perform as expected. The child safety seat mounting interface has significant advantages, its rigid link strength is high and it is not easy to loose, and the installation is simple; however, the ISO FIX standard interface must also be provided on the vehicle seat.

The seat belt interface is actually the interface mode of the car itself. It has very good compatibility and can be used with different types of child seats or different standard models. In China, the largest number of child seats are secured by seat belts. The seat belt fixing method can support the child seat in the positive direction (child seat facing forward) or the opposite direction (child seat facing rear). The advantage of the seat belt interface method is that it is highly versatile, and its disadvantage is that the installation is relatively troublesome, and it is easy to cause misoperation and the security level is low.

3. Purchase a child car seat through the certification mark.

“3C” certification is called “mandatory product certification system”. It is a product conformity assessment system implemented in China to protect consumers' personal safety, strengthen product quality management, and implement laws and regulations. The sign to be "CCC" means that the product has passed the safety certification. The “3C” test for child safety seats includes static tests, dynamic tests, burn tests, and toxicity tests. There are also relevant international standard certifications, such as the standards of the European Union, Germany and the United States.

4. Choose a safety seat according to the material.

The safety of the safety seat mainly depends on two aspects, one is the internal structural design, and the other is the application of high-quality materials. The cost of the safety seat mainly depends on the application of the material. From the perspective of the safety seat structure, there are mainly The skeleton and the outer cover are two parts, and the skeleton is an important part to withstand impact.

The skeleton is generally made of plastic. Qualified safety seats should use original engineering plastics. The cost of native engineering plastics is relatively high, but its toughness is good. Once an accident occurs, it can withstand huge impact. The inferior safety seat is usually processed with recycled plastic. Made of recycled plastics, low cost, relatively fragile, and insufficient toughness. In the event of an accident, not only can not withstand huge impact, but may cause the seat frame to break under the action of huge inertia. This kind of safety seat can not only protect the safety of children's ride at critical moments, but it may increase the harm to children.

Another important component of the safety seat is the cloth cover. All 3C-certified fabrics must undergo rigorous safety tests such as static testing, dynamic testing, combustion testing and toxicity testing. For example, the burning test is mainly that the burning speed of the plastic, fabric, etc. of the seat per unit time cannot be too fast, and it must meet the requirements of GB8410-2006 "Combustion Characteristics of Automotive Interior Materials". The toxicity test is based on the standard of the elemental migration test of GB 6675-2014 "Toy Safety". It tests whether the seat contains heavy metal elements and toxic substances such as formaldehyde.

5. Try to sit and try before you buy.

Before purchasing a safety seat, choose the appropriate safety seat according to the way the car is installed. In addition to listening to the salesperson's introduction, you should read the product manual carefully, it is best to let the child sit down. It should be noted that after the seat is installed, the height of the seat back should be higher than the back of the child; the head should have a protective pad, and the shoulder strap should be adjustable to suit the child's growth, and the chest should be made of a soft chest pad material.

6. Try to match the seat according to the growth stage.

Some seats on the market have a long life promotion period, and the span of age and height and weight are very large. Many parents think that such a product is good, and one can always use the child to grow up. However, this large-span seat has its drawbacks. In order to meet the needs of children of different ages, there are compromises and trade-offs in design, so the pertinence is not strong. For parents who often need to travel with their children, it is recommended to purchase them according to the growth stage.

7. Choose a safety seat according to the way of travel.

With the increasing number of families traveling by car and visiting relatives and friends, the expressway has become the only way for traffic. It is especially important to take a child on a highway and choose a safety seat with a high safety factor. Consumers who frequently take the highway may consider providing the car with a safety seat that is more suitable for high-speed roads. In addition to modules such as a protective frame and a seat belt, such safety seats are usually equipped with independent energy absorbing devices. In the event of a traffic accident, the level of protection for children will increase.

8. Install the seat in the rear position.

Because in the event of a traffic accident, the driver will protect himself by instinct and subconsciously move to the left, so the passenger seat is often the most dangerous place. In addition, because the co-pilot is equipped with an airbag, in the event of an accident, the airbag can be completely filled in a few milliseconds, and its huge impact will cause serious injury to the child. It is therefore not recommended to install the seat in the co-pilot position. Installation in the middle of the rear of the car is also not desirable, because most child safety seats are equipped with three-point car, 5-point seat belt or ISO FIX interface, and most models have no ISO FIX interface in the middle. The seat belt also has only one belly strap and does not effectively secure the safety seat.

9. Use used seats with caution.

Safety is no small matter, and it can only be used if the seat is in compliance with the relevant standards. Because second-hand seats may experience collisions and long-term use, it is easy to cause problems such as component wear and bacterial growth, which poses a safety hazard to children's safety and health.
