New nano-coating can shield hundreds of liquid penetration

The University of Michigan and the Air Force Research Laboratory have jointly developed a new type of nano-coating material, of which more than 95% is air, which can repel hundreds of liquids. Use this material to coat on the gauze or fabric, its surface can form a kind of elastic force to the liquid. A type of liquid that this coating repels is called "non-Newtonian fluid" and includes shampoo, mayonnaise, blood, paint, clay, printing ink, etc. The viscosity of this type of liquid depends on the force they are subjected to. The viscosity of Newtonian fluids, such as water, has nothing to do with their own forces.

Researchers call this nanocoating "super full liquid surface", which is a mixture of elastic plastic particles called "dimethicone", which can form a repulsive force on the liquid from the cubic nanometer scale. The researchers pointed out that the chemical composition of this material is important, but more important is its texture. No matter what surface it is used on, it can be tightly attached to the hole-like structure, thereby forming a finer mesh in these holes. This structure also means that 95% -99% of the coating forms an air bag, so any liquid that contacts the coating can hardly touch its solid surface. Because the liquid can only contact the filaments on the surface of the fabric coating, the force between the molecules is greatly reduced.

"When the two materials are close enough, each other will be affected by the positive or negative charge of the other. If it is solid-liquid contact, the liquid will enter the solid and form a diffusion. This nano-coating makes the solid surface and liquid The interaction between the drops is greatly reduced, "said the author of the paper, Anise Tutia, associate professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Michigan." Almost any liquid that drops onto it will immediately bounce off without forming a wetting. Currently There are also other similar liquid-proof materials, but some liquids with low surface tension such as oil, alcohol, organic acids, organic bases and various solvents will drip on it, and will stick and spread out. The researchers tested more than 100 liquids, and only the two chlorofluorocarbons used in refrigerators and air conditioners penetrated the coating. In the laboratory, they demonstrated that the coating can repel coffee, soy sauce, vegetable oil, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, avoiding clothing contamination and skin burns. Tudia said that it can also repel gasoline and many kinds of alcohol. "So far, no one has demonstrated the elasticity of low surface tension non-Newtonian fluids."
